Dear Debra Zumbuhl,
First of all, check if there is a physical write protection
on/off tab or button on the drive. If there is none, you will have to boot in
safe mode, and using the command prompt, format the drive to get past the write
protection. To do this, follow these steps:1. Find the letter of your drive.
1. Shutdown your computer.
If the official driver can not be downloaded, a copy of official driver can be provided at local server download.opendrivers.com, download1.opendrivers.com, or dl2.opendrivers.com. In order to ensure the right driver download, Official driver links from Canon are listed at first. Canon picture style editor manual free. Canon Picture Style Editor 1.6 Instruction Manual(EOS-1D Mark IV) 1.0 Windows All was collected from Canon official site for Canon Digital Camera.
2. Insert the drive into your computer.
3. Turn on your computer and then immediately start pressing
the F8 key. The Advanced Boot Options screen will come up.4. Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt by using the arrow
keys and pressing enter.5. Windows will load it’s files.
6. If your drive letter is F, type “F:” in the command
prompt that appears, and press enter .7. Type “format F:” and press enter.
8. You may be asked if you wish to force dismount the drive.
If this happens, type “y” and press enter.9. Now a full format will start which will remove write
protection from the drive.10. After the format finishes, you will need to type in an
11 character or less name for the drive, or press enter to give the drive a
blank name.Remember to substitute F with the letter of your drive, and
please let me know if this works!Sincerely,
Brian Bearsall

A little about the drives. They feel very cheap and are almost (or completely) made of plastic. This includes the male end of the USB plug itself which is almost always made of metal. I didn't notice this when buying the drive. Despite this, they have worked fine for me over the past couple weeks. The only other bad thing I would say is, the USB plug being plastic makes it a little harder to insert into the female USB plug on my computer. I think this is due to the plug’s plastic construction making it a little thicker than the standard metal plug. Had I needed something for long term use or for use with important information, I would have opted for another brand/type of drive. For that use, the PNY Metal Attaché 32GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive would have been a better option. It does cost a little more money but the device as displayed on Amazon, has a metal USB plug not one made out of cheap plastic.
In summary, I think these drives are a pretty decent value for the money I paid. However, if I were to buy again, I would look for something in the same price range (or close) that is made of metal (at least the male portion of the plug). Though not great, they do work.
If you have a malfunctioning or corrupted USB drive, formatting it may be the best way to get it back to its original working state. Even if your drive is healthy, you may still want to format it to get rid of the contents there.
This article looks at some ways you can format a USB drive on Windows. If you know some other ways of achieving the same result, tell us about it in the comments section below.
Which File System Should You Use?
Before you format your USB drive, you need to think about which file system to use. Wondershare serial key and email. File Systems are simply ways of organising data on a storage device (such as hard drives or SD Cards), and support for various file systems varies depending on your operating system.
Windows 10 offers three file system options when formatting a USB drive: FAT32, NTFS and exFAT. Here is the breakdown of the pros and cons of each filesystem.
Pros | Cons | Best Used For | |
---|---|---|---|
Fat 32 | * Compatible with all major operating systems. * Less memory usage. | * Cannot handle single files larger 4GB. *Limited partition size (up to 32GB). | * Removable storage devices such as USB Flash Drives. * Devices that need to be plugged into a variety of operating systems. |
NTFS | * Can create partitions larger than 32GB. * Can read/write files larger than 4GB. * Supports on-the-fly file encryption. | * Limited cross-platform compatibility. | * Internal hard drives. * Windows system drives. |
exFAT | * Provides an unlimited file and partition size. | * You may need to install drivers to get exFAT compatibility on Linux. | * External hard drives. * Flash drives if you want to work with files larger than 4GB. |
Now, let’s take a look at some ways you can format your USB drive on Windows 10.
Method 1: Format USB Drive using File Explorer
This is the easiest way and simply requires you to plug in your USB Drive, open the Windows File Explorer and right click your drive to view a number of actions that you can perform.

Clicking the “format” option will open a new window where you can configure the available options before formating your drive.
I will be going with the NTFS file system because I need cross-platform compatibility (Windows and Linux), and I may need to transfer files larger than 4GB on occasion.
As for allocation size, it all depends on what you want to do with your drive. If you have a large drive (such as a 500GB hard drive), a large allocation size such as 32 kilobytes will make your device faster, but storage space may fill up quicker. For small drives, such as 4GB or 8GB flash drives, a smaller allocation size will help conserve space.
I’m going with 4kb (4096 bytes) as my allocation size because I work with small files most of the time, and my flash drive is just 16GB.
The volume label is simply the name of your USB Drive. You can name your drive anything you want.
Once you have selected the options, you can click the format button to begin the formatting process. Ticking the “Quick Format” checkbox means that your drive will not be scanned for bad sectors. If you have a malfunctioning drive, you might want to uncheck that box for a more thorough scanning.

A success message will be displayed on the screen once the formatting is completed.
Method 2: Format USB Drive Using Command Prompt
Another method of formatting your USB drive is by using Diskpart, a command prompt utility.
All commands given below should be entered without quotes. A full screenshot of the steps is shown below.
1. Search for the command prompt on the Start Menu or just type cmd
. Right-click the command prompt icon and select “Run as Administrator.”
2. Once the command prompt opens up, type in the following command:
3. Next, type the following command to view the active drives on your machine:
It will also show you the disk numbers and storage parameters for all active drives.
4. Use the select
command to choose your USB drive. In this case I entered select disk 1
because my USB drive is disk number 1 as seen in the previous step. Make sure you don’t select your internal hard drive or you could destroy your system.
5. Next, type in the following command:
It should display a success message on your screen.
6. Next, type in the following command:
This will create and activate the specified partition.
7. Now it’s time to format your drive. All you need to do is enter the following command:
If you want to use FAT32 or exFAT, simply replace “ntfs” with either of the two formats in the command. And don’t forget to change the name of the drive.
8. Lastly, enter the following command:
Then exit the command prompt.
Your USB Drive should be cleanly formatted and ready to use.

Pny Usb Drive Format Utility
I've tried EVERYTHING I can find on Google. Sometimes I'll get lucky and the Windows format option will pop-up and I format it, then right-click on the drive, select Properties, and click error checking. I've done both options multiple times including 'Scan for and attempt to recover bad sectors' which does successfully fix my drive....temporarily. If I unplug it (by correctly ejecting it, which I always do) then it will decide on it's own if it wants to be recognized. If I try to put any size and/or type of file on the drive, then it will stop at an unspecified time through the process and give me some sort of error saying it cannot copy the file because the specified path file does not exist. Something like that.
I've tried Disk Management and renaming the letter for the drive then formatting. No effect. Uninstalling the drivers through the Device Manager, restarting, then inserting the USB back into to re-install them. No effect again. Multiple HDD programs that I've seen suggested online (such as Seagate, HP USB, or MBRFIX) but none work or sometimes won't even recognize the drive. The most success I've had (I guess) is from Diskpart. I found a thread where someone gave a thorough list of commands to try if the simple Clean>Create Partition>Format operation didn't succeed but none of the options worked. I kept getting messages like 'access denied' or 'system file path not found'. When I use the command 'List Volume' I've seen the status say healthy the first time I used Diskpart but now it says unusable.
I really want to fix it if I'm able to, so any help will be greatly appreciated. If you need more info or screenshots, I will reply promptly.
